Preventing Workplace Violence

(From Venture HRO LLC Newsletter. Feb 5, 2010)

Few employees go to work with any thought of dealing with workplace violence. However, if you're an employer, this should be an important part of your workplace safety program.

Employers are required to provide a safe place for their employees to work and that includes making reasonable and prudent efforts to prevent workplace violence.

OSHA just updated its "Recommendations for Workplace Violence Prevention Programs in Late-Night Retail Establishments." Although focused on convenience stores, gas stations and liquor stores, the workplace analysis checklists and reporting forms would be applicable to any business, with just minor tweaking.

All employers should take the following steps:

  • Assess your workplace for potential workplace violence risks and security
  • Develop and enforce a workplace violence policy
  • Train employees on risk factors and appropriate actions to take
  • Conduct pre-employment screening
  • Review layoff and termination process
  • Develop a crisis response plan
  • Test and modify the crisis response plan as needed
